Diary || Happy Cake Day to Me

Hey there pudding cups~

Today I come to you as a fresh and new 19 year old me. Time really flies, I can remember going through such an emotional meltdown just 4 years ago when I was 15 and realised I would be halfway to 30 and now look at me, I'm almost 20 years old and a proper adult. There's no avoiding it next year, unfortunately. I mean, right now I'm legally an adult but there's still a lot I can get away with because I'm a teenager. But next year.. nope. That's it, I'm an adult. It's time to get married, have kids and get myself into some serious debt. Of course I'm kidding, I have a lot of friends in their 20's who you wouldn't even guess it, so I'm not that worried. I am a little freaked out though, because you know, it's a pretty big change. But I guess that's life, and who knows, maybe by the time my next birthday rolls around I'll be a more capable person.

Onto more positive things though, this morning I woke up to the sweet smell of freshly cooked waffles. I got out of bed to find that my partner had filled the hallway completely with balloons! I don't care how old I am, if you think I didn't run through that shit just to see them all fly up and bounce off the walls you are dead wrong.

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but for the last few months I have been obsessed with banana waffles/pancakes. They're so healthy and easy to make, I eat them for breakfast every day. This morning though, they were a little less healthy. My partner sat me at the table where there was a nice hot cup of green tea waiting for me and a bunch of heart shaped waffles covered in whipped cream and chopped up fruit. It was really yummy and I felt like a princess having my food waiting for me, just the way I like it.

After breakfast I got dressed and cleaned the house for the party I had planned for tonight. It didn't take long, so I didn't really mind having to clean on my birthday. After that was done, my partner, sister and I got in the car and went out to buy me the polaroid camera I've wanted for a very long time now. Unfortunately, the place we got it from didn't sell any film so until I can go shopping again, I'll have to survive on the 10 sheets that came with it. I was a bit disappointed at that, but then I had sushi for lunch so life was good again.

When we got home we got a few more things done for the party and then chilled out and watched Orange is the New Black. I'm so behind, season three has been out for ages so I thought it was time to finally finish season two. Because everything on the menu for tonight was party food and nothing of any nutritional value, we decided to head out for a bit of a snack at my favourite Japanese restaurant, Taku's Kitchen. We didn't want to fill up too much, so we all ordered an entree each and shared it family style. It was a nice time out and I feel lucky to be able to do things like this now that I'm older.

About five minutes after we came home, people started showing up and it wasn't long until everyone had arrived. As far as birthdays go, it was a little bit lame. I originally wanted to invite a whole bunch of people and have music blaring with lots of pizza and junk food, but then I thought.. there's not really that many people I know that I would want to have in my house at my birthday. I have a lot of 'friends', but I kind of wanted it to only be people that I know for sure like me and I like them. So it ended up being a pretty small group of people but you know what? It's my party and if having a small, intimate group of friends is my idea of a good time then that's what I'm going to do; today was supposed to be about me anyway. What I really appreciated though was that a few people took the time to learn a couple of kpop dances and got up and danced with me, that was pretty rad.

So yeah, that was my birthday. A bit quiet and not super eventful, but still a nice day. I've noticed that as I've been getting older, birthdays have lost their magic. Suddenly you don't want chocolate for breakfast, McDonalds for lunch and cake for dinner or to be surrounded by your entire extended family showering you in Kmart gift cards and the friends you mum invited for you. You just want to kick back and have a day to do you. It's not so much about having a day to celebrate your progress as a human being anymore, rather than having a day to forget the stresses that come with the progress you've made.

But no matter the spirit in which you celebrate your birthday, you still get cake, so it can't be that bad, right?
